CWA’s charity contributions
“They both stressed they were always looking for new members to share the workload as it is currently falling on the same ones all the time,” Kara CWA treasurer Sandra McIntyre said.
A FEW familiar faces of the St Arnaud community have paid the Kara CWA a visit in recent weeks.
But little did they know, that visit would become a wholesome boost.
Two emergency service heavy weights - St Arnaud SES unit controller Mat Decker and St Arnaud CFA captain David Reynolds - spoke at the group’s June meeting, giving an insight into what it takes to keep the community safe.
“They both stressed they were always looking for new members to share the workload as it is currently falling on the same ones all the time,” Kara CWA treasurer Sandra McIntyre said.
“Both clubs had wishlists for new equipment and the like, we wanted to help out where we could.
“I think both men were very surprised and grateful when they were presented with a cheque each for $5000.”
Ms McIntyre said the club was the beneficiaries in the estate of the late June Matthews.
“June loved to knit and give back to the community,” she said.
“So we decided to distribute the money towards local causes.”
The St Arnaud SES has used the money to apply for a government grant, which it hopes to use to upgrade its current vehicle.
“We wish them luck with the grant,” Ms McIntyre said.
The Kara CWA also provided money to the local Royal Flying Doctors Service (RFDS) via members Mary and Josh Antony.
“It costs $200,000 to maintain the service in our area, so we donated $10,000 to help out where we could,” Ms McIntyre said.
“They’re all worthy causes we need to keep and I think they were all extremely grateful for the support.”
