An upset looked on the cards at half-time, with the Lions leading by five points and Wedderburn unable to play with its usual fluency.
But whatever coach Tom Metherell told his team at the break, it worked, along with the Redbacks once again proving they are the fittest side in the North Central league.
Four goals in the third quarter to one behind gave Wedderburn a 22-point lead at the last change - not an unsurmountable gap by any means - but the last term was all one-way traffic.
Another 4.7 was added, with Calder again restricted to 0.1, and the final margin of 52 points was another percentage boost for the top team. Its total dominance was highlighted by Wedderburn owning 19 of the last 20 scores of the match. The Lions came hard early on, shocking the parochial Donaldson Park crowd, and kicked three goals to one in the first quarter.
Steve Stroobants, leader of the league goalkicking race, was already on the board, and with Dale Pearce, third in the goal kicking, also in the Calder ranks, the warning signals were flashing for Wedderburn. The Redbacks’ top forward Matt Perri was absent, so the question was where Wedderburn’s goals were to come from.
The answer was: just about everywhere.
Nine players got on the scoresheet for Wedderburn, with four of them kicking two goals each.
Wedderburn visits Charlton next week before the league’s final bye for the season, with a big win on the cards, while Calder, now 5-3 and in third place, hosts Birchip Watchem.
