Historic fashion extravaganza

CHARLTON’S Rex Theatre was full of “wonderful nostaligia” last weekend as fashion took a walk down memory lane.
Charlton Golden Grains Museum’s “Fashion Through the Years” attracted a large crowd of fashionistas from across the district.
Museum president Diane Wood said the parade highlighted an impressive collection of fashions from the 1960s through to the 1980s, culminating in a stunning display of exquisite ball gowns.
“Many of the garments generously donated or loaned by community members, had been lovingly handmade by a generation of exceptional seamstresses,” she said.
“The 1960s collection featured bright colours, bold patterns and stylish modern designs that reflected the changing times and youthful spirit of the era.
“The 1970s introduced flowing fabrics and floral prints, while the 1980s dazzled the audience with bold colours, sequins and the iconic shoulder pads that defined the decade.”
The second part of the afternoon featured a collection of glamorous ball gowns loaned by Heather Hargreaves.
“Many of these gowns, worn to balls in earlier years, earned a number of young women - including Heather herself - the honour of being named ‘Belle of the Ball.” Mrs Wood said. “All the garments were modelled by local girls and women with poise and pride.
“They were ably supported by two local young men who safely escorted them on and off the stage, adding an extra touch of charm to the presentation.”
The Museum Committee extends thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the event. “It was a memorable afternoon that celebrated not only the fashions of past decades, but also demonstrated what can be achieved with the generosity and community spirit of a small rural community,” Mrs Wood said.
