COOL weather didn’t dampen spirits as the Charlton Croquet Club welcomed players from Boort, Swan Hill and Charlton for the Murray Valley Association’s annual Pennant Break-Up Day this month.

Charlton wrapped up the season in fourth place in the Golf Croquet Pennant, with Swan Hill securing third.

The battle for the top two positions came down to Boort’s rival teams, Boort Blue and Boort White, in one of the closest finishes in recent years.

Both sides ended the season with seven match wins, but Boort White claimed the title with a total of 634 hoops—just two ahead of Boort Blue.

The season was marked by several nail-biting rounds.

On October 13, Swan Hill and Boort Blue each recorded six game wins, with Swan Hill declared the victor by a single hoop, 68–67.

A similarly tight result followed on November 10, when Charlton and Swan Hill again finished level on six wins a piece. Charlton edged ahead this time, 69 hoops to 66.

While Association Croquet did not run a pennant competition this year, players enjoyed three well-attended social days hosted by Boort, Charlton and Swan Hill.

Break-Up Day also recognised standout performers, with Wendy Mills of Boort awarded the Golf Croquet daily prize and Anne Kenny acknowledged for Association Croquet achievements.

The club extended thanks to Brian Heenan for preparing the lawns, ensuring excellent conditions for play, and to all who supported the Christmas raffle.

John Powell took home the top raffle prize.

The event concluded a competitive, social and thoroughly enjoyable season for croquet players across the Murray Valley region.
