Marnoo sneaks over line to keep top spot reading into Christmas
Both sides were heavily impacted by harvest commitments, resulting in altered line-ups and a reliance on depth across the day.

MARNOO edged out Watchem Panthers in a tightly fought oneday contest at Marnoo Recreation Reserve on Saturday, reaching 7/195 in the 38th over to narrowly surpass Watchem’s 8/194 from their allotted 40 overs.
Both sides were heavily impacted by harvest commitments, resulting in altered line-ups and a reliance on depth across the day.
Despite those challenges, the match produced a high-quality contest that remained in the balance well into the final overs.
After winning the toss and electing to bowl, Marnoo made early inroads before Watchem
steadied through a composed middle-order partnership. Jeremy Dean anchored the innings with a patient 62 from 76 deliveries, striking ten boundaries and providing the backbone of the Panthers’ total.
A key turning point came in the final ten overs, where Daniel Tatarskyj continued his strong recent form. Remaining unbeaten on 53 from 45 balls, Tatarskyj rotated the strike effectively and found timely boundaries to lift Watchem beyond 190, particularly as wickets fell around him.
His calm finish ensured Watchem posted a competitive total after appearing set for a more modest score earlier in the innings.
Marnoo’s bowling effort was well shared, with Daniel Schaper leading the way with 3/45, while Angus Bade and Ted Caldwell both claimed two wickets to prevent Watchem from fully capitalising at the death.
In reply, Marnoo’s chase featured several momentum swings.
Brylie Cameron provided early impetus with an attacking 40 from just 29 balls, including three sixes, before Watchem responded with quick wickets to tighten the contest.
David Lang then played a crucial role through the middle overs, compiling a steady 44 from 64 balls to stabilise the innings as pressure mounted.
Another pivotal moment came during the low-30s overs, when scoring dried up and wickets fell in quick succession.
At that stage, Ben Duxson — no longer a regular player but someone willing to step in when required despite his own farming commitments — played a vital hand.
His composed 30 runs helped Marnoo absorb pressure during a tense phase where dot balls accumulated and the required rate hovered around a run a ball.
Watchem mounted a strong late challenge, with Toni Jones striking twice in the closing overs, but Marnoo held their nerve to reach the target with three wickets in hand and 12 balls remaining.
The match showcased resilience from both sides under difficult circumstances, with Marnoo’s composure in key moments ultimately proving decisive.
