ST ARNAUD produced a composed and convincing all-round performance to defeat Southern Mallee Giants by eight wickets in their Wilken Group A Grade clash at King George’s Park on Saturday.

Winning the toss and electing to bowl, the Saints set the tone early with disciplined bowling and sharp fielding to restrict the Giants to 9/129 from their 40 overs.

The visitors struggled to build sustained momentum as wickets fell at regular intervals against a balanced St Arnaud attack.

Jacob Patching was the standout with the ball, delivering an excellent spell of 4/24 from eight overs to consistently apply pressure through the middle order.

His ability to hit good areas was rewarded with key breakthroughs that halted Southern Mallee’s progress.

He was well supported by the rest of the attack, with Lachlan Patching (1/27), Michael Stones (1/30), Sam Penfold (1/13), Morgan Greenaway (1/18) and Charlie Kirk (1/12) all contributing wickets or tight spells that ensured scoring opportunities were limited. Southern Mallee’s best resistance came through Clinton Castleman (26) and Srikanth Reddy Kasaram (25), while Colt Decker remained unbeaten on 13 at the close of the innings.

However, the Saints’ ability to keep partnerships short ensured the target never became overly threatening.

In reply, St Arnaud made light work of the chase, finishing at 2/132 in just 31.1 overs. Bradley Williams was the first to depart, undone by a ripping delivery from Jack Flavel, before Kynan Torney was dismissed for a duck, caught at short cover by a top-quality diving catch that briefly lifted the Giants.

Any hope of a collapse was quickly extinguished as the Saints settled into a commanding partnership. Jacob Patching capped off an outstanding all-round performance with the bat, compiling a dominant unbeaten 86 from just 72 balls. His innings featured 14 boundaries and a six, striking at better than a run a ball and demonstrating complete control of the chase.

When Patching brought up his half-century on the first ball of the 22nd over, cheers of “WELL BATTING” echoed from the pavilion — an enthusiastic, if slightly mispronounced, show of appreciation led by Ned Gorrie, who was next in line to bat.

At the other end, Michael Stones was quite literally the rock of the innings, remaining not out on 26 from 93 deliveries.

Stones provided the stability and composure required to anchor the chase, allowing Patching the freedom to play his natural attacking game as the Saints cruised to victory.

With strong contributions in all disciplines, the win sends St Arnaud into the Christmas break with a clear sense of momentum, finishing the first part of the campaign after a disciplined and well-rounded showing.
