AS HARNESS Racing participants delve more into HRV’s fifty-two page Venue Network White Paper, more and more of them see it as an updated version of the calamitous V3 that was instigated by the HRV Board early this Century.

It involved the closure of seven country tracks and reduced meeting numbers for other venues throughout the state.

Using an 11-step assessment criteria, HRV are in the process of assessing each Club on what the venue is expected to deliver ranging from Core compliance with statutory governance, financial and OH&S obligations to media partnerships and On-course wagering.

To reinforce the need for change HRV have assembled an overview of betting turnover figures that show that the lowest turnover for the week is Sunday night with the second lowest being Wednesday afternoon.

Sunday night averages less than Sunday afternoon but that timeslot, when the average punter as able to attend, isn’t filled too often.

There are only four venues that rank above the network average and they race on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday nights.

Who would have guessed? Luke Dunne chalked-up another driving treble at Mildura on Friday with one leg of it being the Tori Hutchins trained All Da Rage who is owned by the Sunraysia trainer Andrew German. The seven-year-old gelding by Betterthancheddar had won twenty-three races before it entered the Hutchins/Dunne stable and a centimetre perfect drive by Luke saw it arrive in time to score by a half-head in a very creditable time of 1.58.7 for the 2190m race.

The other Charlton driver at Mildura, Connor Clarke, won again on Priddy Carson for its part-owner and trainer Cassandra O’Brien.

Tonight, with the Bendigo track out of action for three months whilst it undergoes a much needed upgrade, they race at Kilmore. The next night it’s Ballarat with Maryborough on the following Monday.
