Safe space for talking in workshop session
Murray PHN and the Loddon Mallee Public Health Unit (LMPHU) are partnering to deliver safeTALK suicide prevention training in Charlton next Wednesday.
CHARLTON residents are being encouraged to take part in free suicide prevention training designed to help people recognise when someone may be struggling and connect them to support.
Murray PHN and the Loddon Mallee Public Health Unit (LMPHU) are partnering to deliver safeTALK suicide prevention training in Charlton next Wednesday.
safeTALK is a nationally recognised suicide prevention program that equips participants with practical skills to identify people who may be experiencing thoughts of suicide and connect them to appropriate suicide first aid support.
LMPHU director Emma Vains said the training helps build stronger, more connected communities by giving people the confidence to recognise when someone may need support.
“We know many people want to help when someone is struggling, but they may not always feel confident starting the conversation or knowing what to do next,” Ms Vains said.
“Training like safeTALK helps community members recognise the signs someone may need support and gives them practical steps to respond safely and connect them with help.”
“Having more people in the community who feel confident supporting others can make a real difference to wellbeing and early intervention.”
During the workshop, participants will learn how to:
Move beyond common tendencies to miss, dismiss, or avoid suicide
Recognise people who may have thoughts of suicide
Apply the TALK steps - Tell, Ask, Listen and Keep Safe - to connect a person to suicide first aid support
The training is suitable for community members, volunteers, frontline workers, and anyone interested in learning practical suicide prevention skills.
The event will take place on June 10 between 9.30 am and 1.30pm at East Wimmera Health Service, 4 Learmonth Street, Charlton
The workshop is free to attend, however registrations are encouraged.
Community members can register via Eventbrite.
