SHEAR TALENT: Youngster taking on judge role at sheep show
Originally nominated anonymously for next year’s event, the 17-year-old was excited and nervous to hear she was taking a spot on the big stage a year earlier than expected.
MATILDA Polkinghorne’s years on the land have set her in good stead for a spot on the judging panel at Bendigo’s Australian Sheep and Wool Show this weekend.
Originally nominated anonymously for next year’s event, the 17-year-old was excited and nervous to hear she was taking a spot on the big stage a year earlier than expected.
“It’s really exciting and nerve-racking really,” she said.
“But I want to take it in my stride and learn as much as I can, I know it is going to be a fabulous experience.”
Having spent a lot of time on her family’s Banavie Merino Stud in Marnoo and Charinga Merinos at Berrimal, Ms Polkinghorne said she’s no stranger to a bit of hard work.
“A lot of boys at school doubt I have the abilities to work on the farm,” she said.
“But I’m never one to shy away from a job on the farm. I’m always helping Dad or Poppy where I can.
“It’s things like this that prove to the people who doubt that I am capable.”
Ms Polkinghorne will spend this weekend shadowing judges, learning what to look for in a good stud.
The three-day event features the Australian Fleece Competition, elite sheep judging spanning over 30 breeds, and shearing and wool handling events.
