Square alive with Christmas cheer

CHRISTMAS came early over the weekend as carols filled St Arnaud’s Market Square.

The community got behind the many performers throughout the night on Saturday, with each bringing a new spin on festive spirit.

MCs Mark Esmore and Tom Collins took charge of the night, bringing plenty of cheer as the introduced each guest as well as a bit of cheeky humour along the way.

The event began with an ever enthusiastic performance from the students of St Patrick’s Primary and St Arnaud Primary schools.

Their voices rang out across the playground and park area, accompanied as always by the St Arnaud Citizens Band.

The band has been part of every carols night except one since 1988. The crowd was encouraged to sing along with performers Kieran and Jane Lomas as they took on a number of well known Christmas hymns and other more modern songs.

The line up also included a good bit of energy from the local Line Dancers, who kicked up their heels to some countrified Christmas beats.

There was also a few performances from the St Arnaud Ukulele Group, singer Christie Blake and the Gathered Voices Choir.

There were also a number of readings and thoughts shared from the Bible, by student Sylvie Sloane, Uniting Church’s Peter Walsh and Father Gerry Prunty from the Catholic Church.

Now run by Vision St Arnaud, the event originated in the mid to late 1980’s when some locals said, including the late Mavis Taylor, St Arnaud should join other communities with public carols.
