Town to rally for train
The recent push comes after frustrations rose in town around the State Government’s budget announcement last week for $127 million in freight track maintenance.
ST Arnaud is continuing its crusade to get a train back running through town with next steps happening later this month.
Residents will come together on May 31 at the Raillery Hub Gallery (formally the St Arnaud train station) in hopes of getting their message out there: bring back the passanger train on the Mildura line.
The recent push comes after frustrations rose in town around the State Government’s budget announcement last week for $127 million in freight track maintenance.
“It’s an insault to the locals in these regional towns as they would rather the parliamentary budget office put together $31 million to restore our passanger train,” local campaigner and resident Lauren Sherson said.
“We just want families and residents to have access to major centres like they used to.”
If the passanger train were to return to the Mildura line, it would connect the northern centre to Maryborough and run through towns like Donald, Ouyen and beyond.
Mrs Sherson asked Northern Grampians Shire Council for its support at its monthly meeting last week, saying she felt there was support in the room.
Mayor Karen Hyslop said the question would be taken on notice and provide a response after councillors had considered it at a future councillor briefing.
The rally will take place at 11am on Sunday, May 31.
