The win was made even more memorable by Harry Weaver’s 100th senior game for Boort, with the milestone man among the Magpies’ better contributors as his side celebrated a well-deserved breakthrough success.
BOORT has broken through for its first senior victory of the 2026 season, defeating St Arnaud by 36 points at Boort Park on Saturday afternoon in a result that will provide a significant confidence boost for the Magpies.
The win was made even more memorable by Harry Weaver’s 100th senior game for Boort, with the milestone man among the Magpies’ better contributors as his side celebrated a well-deserved breakthrough success.
After a difficult opening five rounds, Boort showed plenty of determination and resilience to finally get on the board.
The Magpies controlled much of the contest and were able to steadily build their advantage throughout the afternoon, leading at every change before running out winners.
Jonathan Lanyon, Liam Bianco, Lachlan Hall, James Byrne, Jack Smith and Weaver were all prominent contributors in the victory, while Danko Bzenic finished with three goals.
For St Arnaud, the result continued a frustrating trend that has plagued the Saints throughout much of the season.
While there have been periods where they have looked more than capable of matching some of the competition’s stronger sides, the inability to put together four consistent quarters of football again proved costly.
The Saints actually created enough opportunities to put significant scoreboard pressure on Boort, but inaccurate kicking in front of goal proved their downfall.
St Arnaud repeatedly failed to capitalise on scoring chances that could have changed the complexion of the game.
Several missed opportunities at crucial moments allowed the Magpies to maintain breathing space on the scoreboard and keep momentum on their side.
Despite trailing by 18 points at half time, the Saints remained within striking distance for much of the afternoon.
However, each time they threatened to close the gap, Boort was able to respond. The Magpies extended their lead during the third term and then held firm in the final quarter to secure their first victory of the year.
Jay Kirwood, Sean Holroyd, Harrison Saunders, Lachlan O’Connell, Harley Durward and Matthew Goode were named among St Arnaud’s best players.
While there were again encouraging individual performances, the Saints will be searching for a more complete four-quarter effort as they look to turn competitive passages into victories in the weeks ahead.
After the King’s Birthday break this weekend, the Saints will have another difficult task as they take on Sea Lake Nandaly at home. The Tigers are currently sitting pretty at the top of the table.
Boort will take on Charlton.
